"Climate Change -> Climate Crisis, Now Climate Collapse" [Now is Climate Crisis]

"After the climate crisis, the Earth is now heading toward climate breakdown."

An analysis has shown that humanity has endured a 'deadly heat wave' for the past 10 years, including 2024. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his New Year's address, "The world has experienced a 'decade of deadly heat waves' with 2024 set to be the hottest year on record," and "We must escape this path to destruction called climate collapse." In his

annual New Year's address, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres explained that humanity has experienced the hottest decade in history over the past 10 years, including 2024. He also did not forget to warn that without an active and proper response, we will head toward destruction.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is scheduled to release official temperature figures for 2024 in January 2025. The report is expected to include that 2024 will be the hottest year on record, with unprecedented heatwaves caused by human activities over the past decade. It

is also expected to mention that extreme weather events are on the rise, and greenhouse gas levels are reaching new record highs. It is predicted that more heat will be trapped, accelerating global warming.

"This is climate breakdown, and we cannot afford to lose any more time to turn back from this path of destruction," said Secretary-General Guterres. "By 2025, countries must drastically reduce emissions and support the transition to a renewable future, putting the world on a safer path." He emphasized that this is not an option, but a "necessary and possible."

"In 2024, we will witness record rainfall, flooding and terrible loss of life in so many countries," said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo. "This heartbreaking memory is being shared by communities on every continent." A woman carries

"Cyclone Chido, a tropical depression, devastated the French Indian Ocean island nation of Mayotte in December last year, causing terrible human and economic losses," Saulo said. "Severe heatwaves swept through dozens of countries last year, with temperatures frequently exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, and wildfires wreaked havoc," she added.

WMO stressed that there is a growing need for countries and international organizations to work together to address the severe heatwave risks posed by rising global temperatures.

Meanwhile, the Guardian, a British media outlet, reported that a recent annual analysis of insurance payouts revealed that the world's 10 most costly climate disasters in 2024 will cause about $229 billion (about 337.2 trillion won) in damage and 2,000 deaths. The Guardian reported that

"three-quarters of these occurred in the United States, the world's largest economy, where 'climate denier' Donald Trump will become president in January next year," and "Hurricanes Hurricane and Milton, which hit the US in September and October last year, had a major impact."
