Climate Change Defense Line Collapsed... Last Year's Temperature 1.55 Celsius Compared to Pre-Industrialization [Now is a Climate Crisis]

The last defense line of climate change has collapsed. Last year, the average global temperature rose approximately 1.55 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times. This means that the international promise presented in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change to prevent a 1.5 degree Celsius rise compared to pre-industrial times has been broken.

Climate experts are even warning that we have passed the tipping point of climate change. The tipping point refers to a state where once it is passed, it cannot be returned to the previous state.

In Los Angeles, USA, the 'worst wildfire' has occurred, and the negative effects of climate change are becoming a reality.

On the 10th (local time), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported these two things in detail.

The U.S. National Weather Service issued a red alert for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura County. It warned that the risk of extreme fires will increase as large fires spread quickly due to strong winds.

A wildfire broke out in Los Angeles and other areas on the 7th and spread rapidly. The WMO reported that "at least 10 people have been reported dead, more than 10,000 buildings have been destroyed," and "more than 175,000 people have been ordered to evacuate."

The WMO cited "strong winds + dryness + α" as the cause of the fire. The WMO explained that "last year, the rainy season in the Los Angeles area was longer than average, which allowed plants to grow large and strong," and "since the rainy season ended, there has been a very dry period, so all the large plants have dried up."

The so-called "α" that allowed the fire to spread was abundant fuelwood (kindling). The WMO diagnosed that "the combination of strong Santa Ana winds, dry conditions, and abundant kindling created the 'worst fire conditions.'"

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States explained about this wildfire, "Climate change, including increased heat, prolonged drought, and thirsty air, has been the main factor in increasing the risk and scope of wildfires in the western United States over the past 20 years," and "It is analyzed that climate variability and climate change have direct and indirect negative effects."

This is also confirmed in related studies. A 2016 study confirmed that climate change has made it drier and that large-scale fires have doubled in the western United States between 1984 and 2015. A

2021 related study supported by NOAA also analyzed that climate change is the main cause of the increased frequency of fires in the western United States.

The WMO pointed out that "land management and prevention, and regular brush removal play an important role in fire management," and "evacuation plans are important to save lives."

Meanwhile, WMO reported that the result of an integrated analysis of six data sets showed that the average surface temperature of the Earth last year was 1.55°C (uncertainty margin ±0.13°C) higher than the average from 1850 to 1900. It explained that 2024 will be the hottest year on record.

Earlier, the Korea Meteorological Administration explained in a press release that last year was the hottest year in Korea since 1912. The

six data sets presented by WMO are provided in collaboration with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the Japan Meteorological Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NOAA), the UK Meteorological Administration, and the Climate Research Department of the University of East Anglia.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said, "(Last year's 1.55 degree Celsius rise in the average global temperature) led to devastating and extreme weather, sea level rise, etc.," and "(These results) are due to record greenhouse gases caused by human activities."
