"Meta Discusses Acquisition of AI Chip Design Company 'Furiosa AI'"

Facebook's parent company Meta Platform (Meta) is discussing the acquisition of Furiosa AI, a domestic artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor design company, Forbes reported on the 11th (local time), an American economic media outlet.

Citing a semiconductor industry source, Forbes reported that "Meta is discussing the acquisition with Furiosa AI, and the acquisition may be finalized within this month."

Furiosa AI is a fabless (semiconductor design company) startup that develops semiconductors specialized in AI inference operations for data center servers. It

was founded in 2017 by CEO Baek Jun-ho, who was an engineer at Samsung Electronics and American semiconductor company AMD.

Furiosa AI introduced its first AI semiconductor 'Warboy' in 2021, and unveiled the next-generation AI semiconductor 'Renegade' (RNGD) in August of last year.

The source explained, "Furiosa AI is currently receiving interest from several companies," and "Meta is one of these companies."

The reason Meta is interested in Furiosa AI is interpreted as being for the development of its own AI semiconductor. Meta is purchasing expensive semiconductors from Nvidia to operate AI services, and is promoting its own chip design to reduce these costs. Meta

has announced plans to invest up to 65 billion dollars (93 trillion won) this year in AI and the construction of large-scale new data centers.

Furiosa AI has raised approximately 115 million dollars (167.1 billion won) in funding so far, and earlier this month, it attracted 2 billion won in investment from venture capital firm Crit Ventures.

Naver and Korean investment firm DSC Investment participated in the initial investment attraction, and CEO Baek is known to hold an 18.4% stake.
