Digital Comics Rapidly Grow⋯Japan's Webtoon Obsession

Korean webtoons are expanding their presence in Japan, a "comic powerhouse," where the comic market size is estimated to reach 693.7 billion yen (about 6 trillion won) by 2023. A woman in her 50s said that she visited the pop-up store because she was interested in the relationships and stories between the characters in the webtoon "Entrance to School Mercenary," and there were also people who visited the pop-up store with their children and strollers. Various visitors visited the pop-up store, such as people passing by the building, stopping to chat with employees for a while, and then going inside.

In Japan, where published (paper) comics were traditionally strong, digital (digital) comics have grown explosively since COVID-19 in 2020, surpassing the paper comics market. Digital comics are a concept that encompasses both digital comics, which are scanned paper comics and provided in digital format, and webtoons, which are scroll-format comics produced for the digital environment. As a result, awareness and interest in webtoons have also increased significantly.

In fact, in Japan, it has become a daily routine for the younger generation to enjoy webtoons (comics) on their smartphones (mobile phones). A 21-year-old college student who visited the pop-up store that day said, "Famous comics (bestsellers) are often read in book form, but when we're chatting during breaks in class, asking 'What did you see on Line Manga?' is also a daily conversation," adding, "It seems like most people have (download) Line Manga on their smartphones." Another student, B, said, "I try to read comics (webtoons) on mobile apps whenever I have time."
