According to market research firm Canalys on the 11th, Transion ranked first with 17% in Southeast Asian smartphone market share based on shipments in the fourth quarter of last year. Oppo and Xiaomi followed with 16% each.
Samsung Electronics ranked fourth with 15%, and Chinese company Vivo followed with 14%. Apple and Realme each had 9% market share.
Transion, which ranked first, is a representative Chinese low-cost smartphone manufacturer that sells smartphones in the 100,000 to 200,000 won range in African and South Asian markets. Transion
's rise to the top is analyzed to be due to the brisk launch of new products in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Last year, overall smartphone shipments in Southeast Asia increased 11% year-on-year to 96.7 million units, with Oppo taking the lead for the first time.
Oppo shipped 16.9 million units, accounting for 18% of the market share, while Samsung Electronics came in second with 16.6 million units and 17% of the market share.
Transion and Xiaomi tied for third place with 16% of the market share each.
"The frequent reshuffle of smartphone manufacturer rankings in Southeast Asia is a sign that sales volume alone is no longer a measure of a brand's market position," Canalys said. "In the long term, companies that expand their revenue streams beyond device sales to include software and services will secure a strong position."
