According to Kakao on the 22nd, they will be launching a global advertising platform in North America at the end of this month. The company recently announced this in advance to advertisers and began recruiting applicants.
According to Kakao, the global average monthly active users (MAU) of the messenger KakaoTalk is estimated at around 54 million. Most of these are people who use KakaoTalk in Korea, and various advertising products have been provided to businesses based on this user base in Korea. Representative examples include display ads (DA) that are displayed in the form of image banners on KakaoTalk, and channel message ads that allow users to receive various discount benefits or brand news as chat room messages when they add a KakaoTalk channel opened by a business as a friend.
With the launch of this global advertising platform, advertisers that utilize it can expect to expand their consumer contact points and raise awareness beyond Korea. In addition, while only domestic (Korean) businesses were able to advertise through KakaoTalk so far, the company explained that with this launch, local businesses in the US will also be able to advertise to local users.
This expansion of the advertising business is interpreted as part of Kakao's efforts to secure stable profitability. Last year (2024), the annual sales of the Talk Biz division, which refers to the advertising business based on KakaoTalk, recorded approximately KRW 2.106 trillion, up 6% from 2023. It accounts for approximately 27% of total sales (approximately KRW 7.8 trillion), including Kakao headquarters and affiliate businesses.
A Kakao official said, "We plan to introduce (the advertising platform) to the North American region at the end of this month and provide customized advertising solutions for Korean communities targeting local KakaoTalk users and English-speaking brands." He added, "Through this, we plan to strengthen the depth and connectivity of advertising by tailoring message-type communication advertising, which is the strength of KakaoTalk advertising, to the experience of local users."
