Google, AI features gathered in search... 'AI mode' launched in the US

Google, the world's largest search engine company, is strengthening the provision of AI functions to its search service to counter the challenge of generative artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT. It is expanding the function to allow users to get desired answers through voice and video input, and even act as an agent (secretary) for things like restaurant reservations and payments.

On the 20th (local time), Google held its annual developer conference (I/O) in Mountain View, California, USA, and announced new search functions. At the event, Google introduced 'AI Mode' that applies a customized version of its latest AI model, 'Gemini 2.5'. Through 'AI Mode', users can request searches as if they were having a conversation with the AI by entering search terms, as well as sentences and asking follow-up questions.

Regarding 'AI Mode', Google said, "(The company's) most powerful AI-based search experience, with more advanced inference capabilities and multimodal (utilizing multiple types of data or information together) processing capabilities, as well as follow-up questions and useful web links to help you explore deeper." "You will see a dedicated 'AI Mode' tab on search results pages and the search bar of the Google app in the coming weeks."

'AI Mode' introduces the 'DeepSearch' function, where AI understands the user's question and autonomously searches and analyzes vast amounts of information on the web to provide comprehensive reports or in-depth answers. Google explained, "It comprehensively analyzes disparate information and generates expert-level reports with references in minutes," adding, "This will dramatically reduce the time it takes to research data that would otherwise take hours." It also

analyzes complex data sets and creates customized graphics to match the question. For example, it compares the home game winning percentages of two baseball teams, and it provides relevant analysis based on Google's real-time sports data for such requests and creates interactive graphs to help you understand. Google announced that it will first apply this to sports and finance-related queries (search requests).

Equipped with agent functions, AI will automatically handle a series of processes such as ticket reservations, restaurant reservations, and service applications. It also unveiled a shopping function that allows users to virtually try on billions of clothing items with just one photo of themselves and request automatic payment when the price is right if they find the product they want.

Through 'Search Live', a real-time search function based on smartphone cameras, users can show the camera what they want to ask and the AI will immediately provide appropriate information or explain it through voice. It recognizes what the user is looking at and explains complex concepts or provides appropriate suggestions, and also provides links to various content such as websites, videos, and forums.

'AI Mode' is available to all users in the United States starting today and is expected to expand to other countries in the future. However, the specific schedule for expanding the service has not been announced.
